From Jan. 30th

Dear Mom and Dad,

First of all, don't worry-I am safe! The 27 hours of marathon travel went as smoothly as possible. Our first few days have been spent at the Kagisong Conference Center. The drive here was very beautiful because Botswana is so green from the recent rains. It has poured every day we have been here! In Botswana, this is the best of luck but it also means getting used to being constantly damp and watching as our raised cement pathways turn into rivers. At least it has been pleasantly cool. Everyone is getting along and the program staff have been great. Daniso (the director) is a total mother hen and former nurse. We have had series of lectures on Botswana Culture, HIV/AIDS, and Botswana history. One lecturer said boys in Bots do not understand when a girl does not allow him to "go for the goose" when he has paid for dinner and a movie.

I have learned a little Setswana in our daily lessons. The most useful phrase is "go siame" (ho see ah may) which means goodbye/okay/are you okay?. My teacher even says ga gona mathata (hakuna matata)-lion king anyone? Well I miss you terribly and would do anything for just one more hug but i am happy and we head to our homestays in the village tomorrow. I will be there for four weeks which is very exciting. Hope you are both well and not empty nesting too hardcore.
Love,
Caitlin
P.S. No weird bugs yet but plenty of goats wandering around Gaborone.
