some quick notes

Dear Mr. garbage man,
You would have a field day here...batswana seem to have no concept that trash should go in a trashcan. when you finish something you just toss it aside. I have seen people toss trash on the ground with a garbage can just two feet away. Ah well. that's bots for ya.

I taught today at school and the kids loved it! They were all beaming as I attempted to use setswana to explain the animals found in a tropical grassland. the kids all emphatically said they had never been to a tropical grassland and were shocked to learn they are in one. I also got a round of applause for a poor attempt at drawing a pig later in that class. We finished out the day with twenty questions and a couple rounds of heads up seven up (both of which they had never played before). They even told me school got out half and hour later than it did because they wanted to keep playing. Ke itumetse! (means I am happy in setswana).

On the flip side, i am feeling so homesick which is compounded by the fact that my host uncle is in town which means i am kicked out of my room and have to share a bed with a 10 month old who wakes up in the middle of the night and starts pinching me (hard!) because she wants to play and malebogo, her nanny, who kept kicking me. soooo not much sleep. But such is life.

I think I am going to a rhino sanctuary this coming weekend which should be quite the adventure. I have to navigate buses to Serowe and then to the place. I'm excited beacuse I will be skipping church to go! (I already had to sit through three hours last weekend plus bible study yesterday-bleck). Other news...i baked snickerdoodles and they actually turned out! I'm out of time so i miss you all and if you want to reach me either leave a comment on the blog or crl3@hotmail.com.

LOVE LOVE LOVE,
caitlin

  1. Snickerdoodles are the best! Did your host family like them? Had they ever had cookies like that before? The sleeping sitch sounds terrible, but at least it's only a visit from the uncle, right? I wish I could come with you to the rhino sanctuary; sounds right up my ally. Remember, rhinos have terrible eyesight so hiding is always an option!

  3. caitlin! Your adventures sound like something to behold! I would imagine you to be a natural teacher. Guess what! I filled out our housing forms yesterday and turned them in. We are looking at a house on the other side of arrow on villanova. It has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and... plenty of garden space. There's an orange tree outside. Who knows if we'll end up there. Others want it as well, but it's a possibility! I can't wait to live with you! The amount I miss you is un-containable. Good luck with all!
